Etsy SEO Guide for Digital Product Sellers

Everything you need to know about Etsy search ranking — titles, tags, and how to use all 13 tag slots effectively.

Etsy SEO is different from Google SEO. Etsy's search algorithm — called Etsy Search — ranks listings based on a combination of relevance, recency, and buyer behaviour. Here's what matters most.

The 13 Tags

You get 13 tag slots. Use all of them. Each tag can be up to 20 characters and can include multi-word phrases.

Tips for effective tags:

  • Use phrases buyers actually search for, not generic terms
  • Include long-tail variations ("printable wedding planner" vs just "planner")
  • Match your tags to your title — Etsy rewards consistency
  • Think about the occasion, the format, and the aesthetic

Your Title

Etsy displays the first 55 characters of your title in search results. Lead with your most important keyword phrase. Don't keyword-stuff — write for humans first, then optimise.

Categories and Attributes

Choose the most specific category possible. Attributes (colour, size, occasion) appear in Etsy's filters and help buyers find your work even when they don't search for it directly.

Renewal and Recency

Etsy gives a small recency boost to newly listed or renewed items. This is why some sellers renew their listings periodically — though it only provides a short-term bump.
